Furniture - Infested or Contaminated

(Last Updated: 8/4/2023)

Special Handling Before Disposal

Infested or contaminated furniture, mattresses, or boxsprings should be handled with care to prevent spread of bugs and disease. Upholstered and padded furniture with infestations from bedbugs or rodents, or contaminated with pathogens from urine or blood should not be reused.

Disposal
Prepare item for disposal

Make items unusable by destroying or slashing the upholstery. Seal the item in plastic wrap or plastic bags to protect others and prevent spread of infestations as you move the item through the house.

Bed Bugs
Spray paint or mark the items with the words "Bed Bugs" to prevent others from taking them home. Learn more about managing bed bugs.

Dispose as garbage. Large items that won't fit in your curbside cart must be taken to a drop-off facility, or you must arrange for a hauler to pick up your item for a fee. These items are not part of regular garbage curbside services.
