| PCB (Polychlorinated Biphynyl) Items | (Last Updated: 7/24/2023) | Hazardous Waste. Special handling required. PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyl) were used before the 1980s in items like electrical transformers, ballasts, hydraulic fluids, and plasticizers. PCBs are highly toxic and do not readily degrade in the environment. Therefore, they pose grave contamination risks.

| Disposal | PCBs and PCB-containing items require proper disposal. Ballasts: PCBs may be found in fluorescent light fixtures and ballasts installed prior to 1980. If intact, these ballasts are safe for transport to a disposal facility. See ballast disposal and light fixture disposal information. Old electrical transformers and other sources: If PCB liquid or equipment containing PCBs is suspected, call Kitsap 1 at 360-337-5777 for instructions. A common name for PCB liquid is “Aroclor.” |
