Bedspring mattresses are disassembled so the metal can be recycled. Contact the recycling company listed below to ask about recycling fees, accepted items, and hours. Pocket spring mattresses cannot be recycled with current technology.
Thrift stores do not accept used mattress or boxspring donations. However, you can sometimes give away or sell gently-used mattresses and box springs on Craigslist or social media marketplaces. Try a local buy/sell or Buy Nothing group.
When shopping for a new mattress, look for a quality, durable mattress. Wool and cotton mattresses, while expensive, are made from renewable resources and can last a lifetime with proper care.
